But there are steps you can take to safeguard your mental health during coronavirus. 

5 Ways to Take Care of Your Mental Health During COVID-19

Here are some accessible and affordable ways to safeguard your mental health without physically stepping into a therapist’s office. 

1. Teletherapy

Talk therapy isn’t just for people in acute distress. In fact, regular therapy can help keep you from getting into a serious mental health crisis in the first place.

Many counselors have moved their practices online for the quarantine period, so if you’ve already got a therapist (or have your eye on one), contact them directly to see about moving your sessions to Zoom or phone call.

There are also a wide variety of teletherapy apps that make connecting with a counselor as easy as sending a text message. BetterHelp and Talkspace are two of the best-known services, though you can also find specialty options geared toward specific demographics, like Pride Counseling

Therapy is, in general, not cheap — though the digital apps try to make it an affordable service. BetterHelp is available for $30-$70 per week, billed monthly, which is on par with copay rates for regular counseling covered by insurance. 

Look into other local low-cost therapy options, like training clinics and support groups, to see if they’re offering online support during the outbreak.

2. Meditation Apps

Even if you consider yourself mentally healthy, meditation can be a helpful tool — and it doesn’t have to mean sitting in the lotus position on a buckwheat cushion thinking of nothing. 

Guided meditation apps like Headspace and Calm offer a variety of mindfulness exercises, and many include free resources alongside their paid services. You can also find guided meditation videos on YouTube.  

3. Go Outside

A no-cost way to help stay mentally healthy is to spend time outside. While this is obviously a more challenging proposition than in pre-virus times, it’s still possible.

Many cities and states under shelter-in-place or stay-home orders encourage outdoor exercise excursions, so long as social distancing measures are maintained. While many parks and trails have been closed, others remain open, and walking around your neighborhood is always an option. 

4. Get Moving

While gyms are closed, there are some great ways to get moving at home without spending much money. YouTube channels like Yoga with Adriene offer free yoga practices for every ability level, and a variety of gyms and fitness studios have begun streaming their in-person classes online.

Movement is one of the best ways to stabilize your mood and increase your mental health, no matter your shape or size. One of our favorite body-positive fitness studios, Fat Kid Dance Party, has been offering online classes since well before the quarantine, and they also offer pre-recorded videos. 

5. Be Realistic

Even if you’re checking off every possible box for keeping up with your mental health, it’s important to understand that we’re undergoing a shared traumatic experience — one that’s unprecedented almost every living person’s lifetime. (The last pandemic of this scale was the 1918 H1N1 flu.)

All of which is to say: this is a really hard time, and you’re probably going to have really hard moments. It’s important to be realistic about your mental health expectations and understand that it’s going to be tough, no matter what.

But here’s something to keep in mind: Even though it may feel like it while you’re locked in quarantine, you’re anything but alone. Literally everyone else on earth is going through this with you. So if you’re having a particularly hard day, reach out to someone via text message, phone call, or Zoom hangout to commiserate.

‘Is Ordering Takeout Unethical?’ A Medical Ethicist Answers Some of the Most Common Moral Questions Around Coronavirus

An epidemic is a test not just of our valour but our mores. In a time of lockdowns and quarantines, restaurant closings and shuttered academies, the desire is often to bend the rules, “il rely on” the familiar just-this-once or it-couldn’t-hurt dodging. Even when we’re trying to behave well, there are moral conundrums that present themselves–situations in which we have to choose between one of two options and neither one is risk-free. TIME spoke to Arthur Caplan, chairman of the Division of Medical Ethics at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, about some of the most frequent moral predicaments associated with the coronavirus.

If I’m a young, healthful person and my city has not shut down perfectly yet, should I stay in as part of social distancing or should I go out, corroborate neighbourhood businesses and tip well at restaurants?

You should stay in. If you miss restaurant menu, succession out and gratuity generously that highway. You should not be sitting in groups in public sits. Remember, even if you’re young and healthy, you’re still at risk of turning into a disease vector who could infect others. Simply getting to the restaurant may have asked a bus or an Uber, which could expose you to the virus. The businesses can take the two- or three-week shutdown better grandma can take the virus.

But isn’t ordering takeout unethical very? After all, I’m contributing to the delivery person’s being exposed to me and to others.

I think you can still order; really have the delivery person leave the food at the door and disappear. That’s the protocol now. Don’t exchange paper money, don’t have any physical contact. This is one reason it’s good to ordering online and have everything paid by credit card or otherwise electronically.

If I have children, can I make them to the park so they can get out of the house?

Yes, but rule social distancing. Let them run around, but keep them away from other teenagers. Watch out for your own child or someone else’s sneezing or coughing. And if you have very small children, watch out for what they put in their cheeks. They can either be picking up or spreading viruses through playground toys.

Suppose I’m a mother and have to work from dwelling. Is it indecent to have my nanny come watch my babies so I can get my work done?

I candidly don’t think nannies are going to be going out no matter what, so you’re probably poke. Even if they do, remember that if you live in a city, they may have traveled to you by subway or bus, where they could have become infected. It’s not the hazards of their being in the house, it’s the hazards of their got to get. I symbolize, if you live in an apartment building and a nanny lives down the auditorium, then sure, since you’ve all remained indoors. But that’s not a terribly common situation.

Is it OK to have sex with my partner?

No. I would say unless you’ve precisely been experimented and waited five days that you shouldn’t. No fondling either. I think it’s just too much of a risk that one of you might be infected. Too, we have to remember that older people have sex very and they’re especially in danger. In nursing homes it’s important to explain these risks to the residents.

Is it morally irresponsible to stay a sick relative–and in such cases let’s assume the illness isn’t coronavirus since that invokes other issues?

I think relatives vary. I don’t have to visit my 23 -year-old nephew if he’s sick. I can Skype him and stay in touch via email or textbook. My mother is in a nursing home and I wouldn’t see her. But in between? I think it’s OK to visit. A sick relative may be required by a meal or further assistance, especially if they’re cognitively slipping. “Uh hazards of falls if someone isn’t there be used to help. But be mindful of how you get there in the first place. Walk or ride a motorcycle if you can.[ Ed note: If a homebound case is immunocompromised, you should check with a doctor before calling .]

One more question for parents: If daycare is still open, is it OK to send your child?

Daycare won’t remain open. It’s a nonstarter. They’ll either closed down or the teenagers won’t show up. If there are any daycare hubs that do remain open, I fret more about the child bringing something home that’s going to hurt you or someone else in the household. They come back and they’re going to make older people sick. Again, in the spirit of social segregation, this isn’t business as usual.

Can I go to the pharmacy if I need to?

If you have to pick up medication of course you should, but more pharmacies are doing residence transmission now. They are too waiving 30 -day limits on pills and allowing you to get a 90 -day supply. In all cases, if you go to the pharmacy, try to get everything all at once.

Is it ethical to go to your doctor for a non-urgent problem?

No. Call your doctor; you may also be able to have a visit via WebEx or Skype. I think that’s going to linger on after the epidemic; there’s going to be a lot more telemedicine in the future. If there are appointments that have to be conducted in person but aren’t urgent–like annual scrutinies or six-month follow-ups on a trendy or knee replacement–it’s better to postpone till later.

Is it ethical to rat out a friend or peer who is showing symptoms and discounting them–mentioning the problem to the person’s spouse, say, or to your reciprocal boss?

Yeah, I think in times of pandemic , it’s important to have people who seem sick take care of themselves. Hopefully you can talk to them firstly before talking to a third party. I don’t naturally pester someone who’s not paying attention to their rash or something. But yeah, in such cases I think it’s OK.
